Clinical Study of Depressive Symptoms in Schizophrenic Patients: Comparison between 1982 and 1995.

Abstract
This study was conducted to compare depressive symptoms in schizophrenic patients between 1982 and 1995, using Zung self-rating depression scales. 126 schizophrenic (54 acute, 72 chronic), who were admitted in department of neuropsychiatry, Chonnam National University Hospital and National Naju Mental Hospital during the period from May 1st to September 31th, 1995 were enrolled in this study. The compared group were 127 schizophrenic (61 acute, 66 chronic) in department of neuropsychiatry, Chonnam National University Hospital and Chonnam Provincal Mental Hospital during the period from July 1st to November 30th, 1982 using same method. The findings are as follows: 50 or higher scores frequency of SDS and average of total depressive scores were not changed among acute and chronic schizophrenic patients between 1982 and 1995. But, in comparison of the items of self-rating depression scales, psychomotor agitation, irritability and depressed affect were lower in 1995 than in 1982 in chronic schizophrenic patients. Weight loss, irritability and suicidal rumination were lower in 1995 than in 1982 in acute schizophrenic patients.
